At the Wicklow County Enterprise Awards – by Jillian

I was fortunate enough to be a finalist in the Wicklow County Enterprise Awards 2010 and attended the lunch on Monday July 5 to find out the winners.  In my category (Woman in Business Award) Monica Schaefer from Irish Drivers Education Association took the honour and was very impressive.  So too were the other finalists and the overall Business of the Year award went to popular business people Derek Quinn and Clodine O’Mara from Movie Extras.

Senator Fergal Quinn was the guest of honour and he gave a very interesting speech.  In it he outlined ten tips for top entrepreneurs.  Of course, the customer was centric to his thinking, as was the development of a strong corporate ethos that aspired to high standards and also empowered employees across the workplace.  He told many anecdotes of his time in retail, lessons he had learnt and advice he felt was pertinent to entrepreneurs today.  He pointed out that is was just as possible to succeed in a recession as it was to fail in a boom economy and praised all the finalists for having the vision to succeed in these difficult times.

He capped off his speech by revisiting the well known Henry Ford quote: ‘Whether you think you can or can’t, you’re right!’  He judged us all to be in the latter category and encouraged us to continue thinking in that vein!

And we encourage you to do the same!  Now, where is that Bob the Builder song…can we fix it? Yes we can!
