The Obamas in DublinMay has been the most eventful month in a long time. First Queen Elizabeth and then Barack Obama got a taste of Irish hospitality. International media landed in Ireland to cover both historic visits – for different reasons – and hundreds of pictures and hours of footage traveled fast around the globe, via newspapers, TV channels and social networks.

From a PR point of view, both visits gave the country an exceptional opportunity to shine and project a much needed positive image of Ireland to the world. We have had enough bad publicity in the past few months.

An interesting initiative was created to get Ireland trending on Twitter on the same day Obama landed in Dublin, and turn 23rd May into Ireland’s Day. The idea was to get as many people as possible to use the #IRLday tag on their tweets throughout the day and get Ireland trending globally.

The team behind the project had mobilized over 1,000 people ahead of Obama’s visit and many more tweeted for Ireland on the day: about our books, the food, their favourite places, the best artists, top musicians, greatest movies, etc…

You can see a recap on what #IRLday supporters (including the Practice PR team) tweeted about on the organisers’ From the country’s most beautiful landscapes to the favourite poems. It was a chance to reflect on what we really like about our country and share it with the rest of the world.

May has not just given us Ireland’s Day – it has truly been Ireland’s month.
