Johnstown Castle in County Wexford is welcoming gay couples to celebrate their civil union at the castle. The venue, that has been a popular wedding photography spot for years, was approved as a civil ceremony venue in June and hosted its first wedding in 100 years in September.
“We are delighted that Ireland’s Civil Partnership has finally come into force, allowing same-sex couples to celebrate a legally binding union,” says Rosemarie Meleady, from The Wedding Planner.ie who organises civil ceremonies at Johnstown Castle.
“Since the law became effective on New Year’s Day we have had many enquiries from couples interested in Johnstown Castle as their civil partnership ceremony venue. Johnstown Castle is a completely gay-friendly venue so any couples looking for a castle wedding, shouldn’t hesitate to contact us.”
The first civil partnership ceremonies in Ireland are expected to take place in April, since there is a three month’s notice requirement before the date of the ceremony – similarly to marriage requirements.
There are a range of wedding packages to choose from for those wishing to use Johnstown Castle for their ceremony and part of the fee for the use of the castle will go towards its maintenance and restoration.

“The castle can only host ceremonies, not wedding receptions,” adds Meleady. “However, there are many high quality hotels locally and we have partnered with them to offer a complete hassle-free service.”
